Physical Activity… Every Day!
You felt out of breath yesterday walking up the stairs, so you decided to try to incorporate physical activity into your life! However, it’s a real puzzle… where to start? There are lots of sports options out there, but which one is right for you? You don’t have a lot of time or money to spend, can you still work out? And finally, how much time do you need to move per week for your health? On your shoes, ready? Let’s get started!
Some Sports to Get You Started
The question that often comes up is how do you get started in sports if you’ve never done any before? The answer may seem complicated, but it’s actually very simple: get moving. The options are endless!
Walking, running, rollerblading, biking, skiing, crossfit, yoga… So many possibilities, all waiting for you! The most important thing when starting out is to find something you love to do. There are no sports to choose from… But choose the one that you like and that will make you want to move!
The Choice of Activities
Like any good human being, you won’t want to pursue something you don’t like. In order to enjoy the sport you choose, you will have to do some trial and error at first.
You will also have to set goals. Have you heard of SMART goals? You’ve probably heard of it at work. But it can also be applied to our daily lives!
T: time (when would you like to reach your goal?).
It is often the A and R that are not respected. You may want to have it all, too fast. However, when you start, tell yourself that a step forward, no matter how far, is a step forward.
For example, if you set a goal of running 3 times a week and you’ve never run before… It’s going to be hard to keep up. Then you’ll probably get discouraged because you won’t have reached your goal. And that’s a never-ending circle… You want to enjoy moving and pushing yourself, not feel guilty! Fun is the key to success.
So, the key thing to remember here is to start by telling yourself that you want to add 1 activity to your week. This is much more realistic and attainable than going from 0 to 3.
A Little Tip for Motivation!
Write down this goal on a small piece of paper in plain sight on your fridge, and be proud when you reach it! And then write another one… This will keep you motivated throughout your fitness journey!
As mentioned earlier, there are many sports you can play. But there are some that are more practical and economical!
For example, those that you can practise in the comfort of your living room, on your lunch hour, at the end of the day… There is something for everyone. Most home workout apps offer free trials! This way, you can find the perfect workout for your needs.
There is also the classic activity: running. However, be careful to start gradually, since it still causes significant impact on the joints.
